The King Has Arrived: The Stone Is Throw Aside!

Apr 17, 2022

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. – John 19:38-42

Two previously secret disciples, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, took the body of Jesus and gave it a proper burial in the short time they had before sundown and the start of the Sabbath. It is implied in scripture that Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus did this themselves. They were wealthy and influential men who could have delegated the messy work to servants, yet they most likely did it themselves.

This borrowed tomb would not be needed for long!

The stone that was thrown aside was not moved so that Jesus could get out, but so that others may see that the tomb was empty!

He is risen! He is not here!

When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Corinthians 15:54-57
