The Perfect Priest

Hebrews 5:1-14 KJV

Earthly priests could represent the people before God, but they were limited by their own weakness and sin. Jesus is different. He is God’s appointed, sinless, eternal High Priest who perfectly fulfills everything the earthly priesthood pointed toward.

Hebrews 5 shows us five truths about our Perfect Priest. He represents us before God, He was appointed by God, He learned obedience through suffering, He provides eternal salvation, and He calls us to spiritual maturity.

Jesus does not simply understand our weakness. He overcame temptation without sin. He did not simply offer a sacrifice. He became the sacrifice. He does not provide temporary forgiveness. He is the author of eternal salvation.

But Hebrews 5 also challenges us. Knowing Christ should change us. As our understanding of Jesus grows, our faith, obedience, discernment, and spiritual maturity should grow with it.

Jesus is the Perfect Priest. He is everything the Old Testament priesthood pointed toward and so much more.
