In Genesis 29:31-35, Leah’s story reminds us that God sees what others overlook. Leah was unloved by Jacob, caught in a painful family situation, and longing for affection that never seemed to come. Yet in the middle of her hurt, Scripture tells us that the Lord saw her affliction and opened her womb. God was watching when Leah felt unseen.
With each son, Leah’s heart is revealed. Reuben reminds us that God sees. Simeon reminds us that God hears. Levi shows the danger of receiving God’s goodness while still chasing human approval. But when Judah is born, Leah says, “This time I will praise the LORD.” Her circumstances were not perfect, but her focus changed. She moved from longing for Jacob’s love to lifting praise to the Lord.
This passage speaks to every heart that has felt overlooked, unloved, or forgotten. God is watching. God is listening. God is good, even when people fail us. Like Leah, we may not always receive what we wanted from others, but we can still recognize the mercy of God and say, “Now will I praise the Lord.”
