This week at Celebrate Recovery, Robert shared an honest and powerful testimony of God’s grace through a lifetime marked by insecurity, control, hidden sin, consequences, and ultimately redemption.
Growing up in church, Robert appeared to have everything together on the outside. He excelled in school, became an award-winning teacher, served faithfully in ministry, and was respected by those around him. Yet beneath the surface he battled shame, pride, perfectionism, and secret sexual sin that eventually led to devastating consequences, including the loss of his career, his reputation, his freedom, and many important relationships.
During fifteen years in prison, God began a deep work in Robert’s heart. What felt like the wilderness became a place of humility, repentance, and transformation. Through Scripture, teaching GED classes, and learning to surrender control, Robert discovered that God’s discipline was an expression of His love, not His rejection.
After his release, Robert found a church home through Celebrate Recovery, where he continues to grow in his relationship with Jesus Christ. He shared how recovery has taught him that it is not his job to fix other people, but to trust God to do His work while continuing to surrender his own life daily.
Robert closed with a beautiful illustration from seashells he found while walking on the beach. Though each shell was broken, it still reflected the creativity and purpose of its Creator. In the same way, God continues to redeem broken people who are willing to trust Him.
No matter what your past holds, God’s grace is greater. Your failures do not have to define your future. There is hope, healing, forgiveness, and new life in Jesus Christ.
